Metro Tunnel Project
Public Realm Traditional Owner Engagement and Codesign

Facilitation and Engagement, Codesign

Greenshoot was engaged by Cross Yarra Partnerships, the consortia responsible for the delivery of the Melbourne Metro Tunnel, to undertake engagement with the Wurundjeri, Boon Wurrung and Bunurong Traditional Owner groups in relation to the public realm design of the five new station precincts.

Feedback from initial workshops was used to draft individual Station Precinct reports identifying key narratives and opportunities to influence the public realm design by embedding First Peoples' knowledge and cultural elements as suggested by Traditional Owners. These reports formed the basis for a series of accelerated solution design workshops with Cross Yarra Partnerships (CYP) and the design team. Led by Greenshoot, the workshops enabled the project design team to incorporate this feedback into the precinct concept designs.

Once the precinct concept designs were produced, Greenshoot developed a series of workshops designed to socialise these the designs and gather feedback from each Traditional Owner group as to how the design team had sought to incorporate the initial cultural narratives and ideas at each station.

Further feedback from Traditional Owners was documented for each station, including the necessary steps that would need to be taken to ensure Traditional Owner governance procedures were adhered to, and for the final designs to receive formal endorsement through each Traditional Owner board.

Greenshoot has used this information to report back to CYP on the necessary next steps to progress each of the design elements across the five stations, and looks forward to continuing to work with CYP and the areas Traditional Owner groups to help realise final designs as the project progresses.
